Architectural Description: 314 Commercial St. is a 2-1/2-story Queen Anne-style dwelling converted to commercial use; gable-front roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles, wood cornice with partial returns, shed dormers on left side roof slope; exterior is clad in clapboard siding with wood trim, shaped wood shingles in gable end and on shed dormer; building sits on a brick foundation; fenestration includes paired and single windows, 1/1 and 2/2 DHS, 1/1 DHS in shed dormer; 1st-story storefront is curved at one end and has a cutout entry at other end; storefront contains replacement support post and modern recessed door and storefront windows, a pent eave, and a large frieze below the eaves; right side facade contains several modern alterations such as the paired doors, display windows, 1-story addition, 2nd-story balcony which meets front balcony, 1/1 DHS and single-light awnings; 2nd-story balcony with plain balustrade and corrugated metal roof; archway over recessed paired doors connects this building to 312 Commercial Street.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): (314 rear) The house at 314 Commercial Street is shown on the map of 1836 and in the atlas of 1858 is owned by E. Ryder. By 1880, the ownership had changed to M. Lopes, whom nearby Lopes Square is likely named after. This structure, probably the first on its block, dates from the same period as 10 Freeman which is nearby.
