Journal of a Whaling Voyage (Part 1) Schooner E. H. Hatfield

Journal of a Whaling Voyage (Part 1) Schooner E. H. Hatfield
Journal of the Schooner E.H. Hatfield of Provincetown, Mass., as kept by Charles F. Keith Commander/Ship's Master. (Part 1) The Journal covers two voyages of the Schooner Hatfield from Provincetown - the first from November 1865 until October 1866, and the second from January 16, 1867 until sometime in the fall of 1868 (the end of the Journal was reached before the end of the voyage). [A different Journal in the same hand with the same entries, but that ends at a later date although again not the end of the second voyage, exists in the holdings of the Providence Library. It may be that one Journal belonged to the Ship and one to the Ship's Master.] The Journal includes numerous entries of tracking, catching, and processing whales, as well as stops in ports on the way, and details of life aboard ship, including descriptions of storms encountered at sea. (Description continued under Part II.) Transcribed by History Project Volunteer Julia L. Perry.
