Picture this…July 15, 1915…a social gathering of friends in the East End of Provincetown…two plays, one by Neith Boyce and another by husband and wife team Jig Cook and Susan Glaspell…two make-shift sets, one facing the ocean, one facing the living room…the plays were so popular that two more were presented that summer…then returning to Greenwich Village where many of the group lived…enthusiasm abounds…a greater number of artists and writers go to Provincetown the next summer and form the original Provincetown Players…included among these are journalist/poet John Reed, writer Louise Bryant, painter Marsden Hartley, artists William and Marguerite Zorach, the famed “Hobo Poet “ or “Poet of the Dunes” Harry Kemp, editor of The Masses Max Eastman, his wife Ida Rauh, Floyd Dell and Eugene O’Neill… [More...]
